Medication and Drugs

Research is continuing into drug treatments to reduce stammering. However, at present there is no medication available in the UK that can be prescribed specifically to help with the condition.

In the USA, research has been undertaken into whether stammering can be reduced through the use of various drugs already used to relieve symptoms of anxiety. There have been some promising results but, as with the long-term use of any drug, there is the danger of side-effects. It is also important to bear in mind that with this sort of approach you are probably treating only the symptoms of stammering, and the treatment will not eliminate it - the effects last only as long as you are taking the medication.

More recently, again in the USA, trials have been taking place of a drug called Pagoclone, with a view to developing a treatment for stammering. This is a newer drug which up to now has not been commercially available. It, too, has anxiety-reducing effects and, again, side-effects such as headaches and fatigue have been noted in some of the people taking part in trials. To complete the further trials and licensing arrangements which would be necessary to enable it to be prescribed for use in the UK is likely to take several years, even if the trials are successful.
