The BSA's employment campaign
To Employment index
The BSA employment campaign is providing employers and people who stammer with practical advice on dealing with stammering in the workplace.
BSA has two booklets on stammering and employment. These are available in hard copy and on this website. There is a booklet for people who stammer and a booklet for employers. See also our press facts and figures sheet.
The booklets give comprehensive advice to people who stammer on employment and employment rights, and help employers to understand people who stammer, by emphasising the personal and individual nature of stammering in a factual, positive way.
The booklets were researched in consultation with people who stammer, occupational psychologists, employers, communication trainers and speech and language therapists.
The key campaign objective is to get stammering onto the agenda of human resources staff and trainers. BSA will be setting up key contacts with the Employment Service, unions, careers advisors and disability trainers. We have been working with The Employers Forum on Disability to produce a briefing guide (no. 14) which is now available from them - see the EFD website to order it.
The booklets were launched on International Stuttering Awareness Day 2001, 22nd October, at the Barber-Surgeons' Hall in the City of London. The principal guest speaker was Bert Massie, Chairman of the Disability Rights Commission.
