Stammering Awareness Day bag-packs 2004

A big thank you to all who helped us raise over £2,700 at our supermarket bag-packs this October.

Supermarket bag-packs are becoming a very effective way to support our members in raising funds and awareness for BSA. On October 30, 2004 in London 34 people raised £1631.11, thanks to the generosity of Sainsbury's customers in Wandsworth and the dedicated team of BSA volunteers. "With the support of our members, which has been really excellent, I think that bag-packs are going to be an important part of our BSA activities in the future," said Rachel Albert.

On the same day in Manchester, the bag-pack raised just over £600 with just nine volunteers. "If only our members knew how enjoyable it is, and how valuable it is for building self confidence, a lot more people could really benefit by being involved next year," said Howard Yaffe who organised the Manchester event.

What is a bag-pack?
The idea is simple. One person on each till packs shopping bags for customers who want help with this. Each till has a professional looking BSA bucket into which people can put their donation.
The
Sheffield bag-pack on October 23 raised £506.36 and also made some useful contacts in Sheffield. "A huge thank you to all our helpers who included two speech and language therapists," said organiser Vic Bowden. "We have started our invitation list for next year's bag-pack planned for October 22 2005, International Stammering Awareness Day."

"Following a sleepness night of worrying about my first bag-pack, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I really enjoyed the day. The customers were very friendly and accepting and their response to me was great. Thanks to the friendship and support of my fellow bag-packers, it was a very rewarding and memorable experience for me."
David

"For me, the bag-pack was a chance to speak in a really 'safe' environment and was amazed that I had so much to say. Sainsburys' customers and staff alike were very kind and patient. The camaraderie of my fellows packers was just brilliant, great meal and the best company. Thank you Rachel, the most amazing organiser."
Lynne

"My overwhelming feeling at the end of a long day was not just tired feet but I was constantly amazed by the warmth and generosity of people. On a personal note, I felt very relaxed and really enjoyed talking to people about the BSA and the help and support that is available. I thought that this event and putting leaflets into bags with contact numbers was an excellent way of raising awareness of the BSA to many people who may not otherwise know of the Association, not to mention raising necessary funding."
Mike
(Rachel's note: I'm not surprised Mike had 'tired feet- - he was one of the people who did both shifts!)

"A lovely day - the warmth and support of all the BSA bag-packers made all the difference to what would have been a difficult experience for many of us. We should really be proud of ourselves and our achievement on the day."
Vhairi

"I think everyone who took part was very brave to boldly take their posts at the check-outs and ask people if they wanted their bags packed, because despite having done a lot of stand-up comedy performing, even I was a bit scared at first! I was also quite surprised at the amount of healthy food people were buying and I am, consequently, buying more fruit and vegetable as a result of that day!"
Jaik

"I really enjoyed taking part in my first bag-pack. My initial nervous feelings soon disappeared and I was really amazed at how friendly and generous the customers were. I will have the great pleasure to organise several bag-packs for the BSA next year and I will be looking to our members and self-help groups for their support."
Jemima
(Rachel's note: Jemima is taking over from me next year so please help her by giving her your support when she contacts you - thank you).
