First Indian stammering conference

BSA trustee and ISA Vice Chair Keith Boss reflects on the journey taken by India, and that other countries without a stammering association or website might follow the lead.

To people who stammer / stutter everywhere:

Dear friends,
I have been involved, via the International Stuttering Association (www.isastutter.org), in raising the awareness of Stammering in India since 2006. I helped local Indians, and some from the UK, to to build a team and a website and a National Association.

The team has started local self help groups in 19 areas of India and has built TISA (The Indian Stammering Association - www.stammer.in, http://t-tisa.blogspot.com) into a dynamic group of people. The fact that it has grown so quickly shows just how much need existed in India. TISA is now a Registered Charity and I was fortunate to be able to spend 2 weeks last year with many friends in TISA. The visit has been reported on our BSA website and on http://t-tisa.blogspot.com (February-March 2010).

This year TISA have excelled themselves and are planning a National Conference to be held in December 2011 at IHS (www.ihsindia.org) at Bhubaneshwar. English, Hindi & Oriya will be spoken. A large number of participants are expected to be Hindi speaking. Many Indians speak English.

Friends from around the world who are thinking of attending should visit http://t-tisa.blogspot.com.

Friends who are interested in helping either with donations of money or time should visit http://t-tisa.blogspot.com.

Developing associations/ websites in other countries

Some friends from around the world will have no National Association or website. If you have a little free time, and want to explore what to do to get stammering awareness started in your Countries, please contact me.

Keith,
July 2011
