Assessment in Speech and Language Therapy:
Chapter 5 - Assessment of Stammering
Ed. Beech, Harding, Jones
This book aims to provide information to aid assessment strategy. At the end of the book there are some test reviews. (Stuttering Prediction Instrument, Stuttering Severity Instrument - G. D. Riley).
The authors stress the need for a full, broad-based assessment of stammering to take account of overt motorial, biological, cognitive-behavioural, and systems components of stammering, reflecting its complex nature. They aim to present assessment strategies for children, adolescents and adults, but stress the fact that the interaction between assessment and therapy is a continuous, evaluative process.
The initial interview, its importance, practical considerations and proposed contents (for adults, children/adolescents and parents) are highlighted. A functional diagnosis of stammering is recommended by analysing symptomatic behaviour and self-rating scales where appropriate. The difference between stuttering and cluttering is noted. Assessment of cognitive, social skills, intellect and family systems concludes the chapter.
