The Golden Bird is a lovely book. It's about Andrew, who is unhappy as he stammers. He spends most of his time trying not to be noticed until he is given the part of the 'Golden Bird' in the school play. After much apprehension and doubt Andrew finds he wants more than anything to do the play and with the support of his teachers he gives a marvellous performance.

This book is ideal for parents wishing to broach the subject of stammering with their child. It highlights the feelings of isolation and alienation many children may feel at school. It also addresses difficulties which may be being experienced within the home. In the book Andrew had suffered a bereavement and felt unable to communicate with his mother at a time which was difficult for them both. It above all shows how children can excel and feel proud of themselves if given the opportunity and support. It would be ideal for 4-8 year olds.
