Book reviews

Living and Learning with a Child who Stutters
by Lise G Cloutier-Steele.

I found the book in places quite harrowing and it made my blood boil as to how Lucas the boy in question had been treated and discriminated against, not only by children but by adults/teachers that should know better.

However on a positive note the book shows that with determination by Lucas's mother she was able to help educate his teachers on how to approach his dysfluency and therefore make a positive contribution in helping him.

Not only does the book give accounts of Lucas's school days but it also gives seven main techniques to increase fluency and gives outlines of the most common questions that a concerned teacher may ask and answers the same.

I found I could relate some of the accounts to my own family, and my son's difficulties in communicating with children especially and making friends.

Overall I found the book to be informative, in parts disturbing but also encouraging.
