Self-help Groups

What is a "Self-help Group"?

A group of people who stammer and get together, typically, once or twice a month. Each group has its own aims and methods of working but all offer a safe, non-judgmental environment in which stammerers can share experiences. Some invite a speech therapist along, and are keen to practice 'speaking in public' and some set aside time for a game of nine-pin bowling or a convivial drink in a pub. All have a live wire organiser!

Self-help groups can be invaluable as a means of meeting others, finding encouragement and remembering you are not alone.

How do I join?

To find out if there is a group near you, see the regional lists below.

Most organisers' contact details are either listed or linked from the list. To get contact details if they are not, or for any other queries on groups, contact our Information and Support Service. Please contact this Service also if you want the organiser's postal address, which we do not normally include on the website. Where the group is marked as "proposed", your getting in touch with the organiser may help get the group going.

There is also a Yahoo group Stutteringselfhelp for people wanting to start a new local self-help group or join a local group, or people already in a group.
