What sort of group do you want yours to be? First steps Communication Meeting Rooms Finance Publicity Establishing the group Leadership Behaviour Relationships Membership Achieving Conflict Ending a group Things to discuss as a group Appendices: Protocol for children being members of a self-help group Equal opportunities Statement for the co-ordinators of self-help groups Dont let stammering stop you from creating the life you want Thank you for your interest in starting a self-help group for people who stammer. There are several well established groups that work very successfully and enjoy a healthy attendance. There are also areas of the country where there is no group at present but almost certainly people who could benefit from one. BSA wants to see many more groups throughout the UK, so that everyone who stammers can have the opportunity to participate in what can be a life-changing process. Please read this manual thoroughly. We hope it will be of help and that it will stimulate your thoughts, ambitions and imagination. Each self-help group is as unique as the people in it. Groups can provide an invaluable base for new members to gain confidence and personal growth which can benefit newer members to a group. New BSA members who are interested in meeting locally with others for self-help will be given the details of their nearest group. For more advice and suggestions about getting started, you may wish to speak to some of the people who are helping to run some of the more established self-help groups in different parts of the country. You can get contact details for most of these on our website, or otherwise from the BSA office. Good Luck! A group of people meeting with common problems or experiences; in this context, stammering. A group that people join to meet their own needs, and provide support for other members. A group of people wanting to take on some responsibility for themselves. A group of people working together co-operatively. A group of people helping themselves by helping others. 3 What sort of group do you want yours to be? Decide collectively how you would like yours to run. It will evolve naturally, depending on members needs. Elect leaders, treasurers, etc. How often will you meet? Do you have business meetings? Do these need to be minuted? You may want a local speech and language therapist running a therapy group to start with, to offer some guidance and input. Technique practice (along lines of therapy group). Members make and take their own decisions. Re-assess the purpose and direction of the group, periodically. 4 First steps Find out if a group near you already exists, which might meet your needs, by contacting BSA. If not, you can set up your own group. Find some like-minded people (BSA can help you with this). Get together, initially in common territory such as a pub, or a caf. Prioritise the need for a venue. A community centre or church hall is a good venue, partly because there are so many of them, but also because they are cheap to hire. Plan an initial meeting, hopefully at your new venue. Advertise well at this point. See how it goes for a few meetings to see if the venue is going to be ideal for you. Dont be afraid to move. It will take a while to see if things are going to work out. Ask for help if required dont suffer in silence. Decide on a trial period of, say, three months, see what happens, and review at the end of this period. 5 Communication Communication is vital to a groups success - it is the lifeblood. *Improves contact between group members. *Allows members to understand whats going on. *Gives people more opportunity to join in. This may be the first talking forum that some members have had in their lives. Writing and drawing: again perhaps a first opportunity. Exchanging feelings: progressing from talking, to talking about things that matter, in a safe and controlled manner. What affects communication in a self-help group? * Size. *Turnover. *The problems facing members. *The structure. *A feeling of equality among members. 6 Meeting rooms If a Speech and Language Therapist is involved in your group, then their department may be an ideal venue to start with. Members homes, initially; and rotate. In the longer term, perhaps either of the above, if it suits your group. A regular venue adds continuity to the group, and can be used in publicity, such as a Church Hall already mentioned. Information and advice on meeting rooms can usually be obtained through: * Council for Voluntary Service. * Council information departments. * Local libraries. * Hospitals. * Local newspapers. Do they have: * Parking facilities. * Toilets. * Kitchen facilities. * Disabled access. Is the venue easy to get to?, i.e. public transport. Who takes care of the keys? Do you play some part in the cleaning of the venue? You may want to consider having policies on smoking and alcohol. 7 Finance Share the cost of running groups. Do you need a treasurer? Small grants in some areas may be available. Renting a room. Refreshments. Phone calls. Publicity costs; can the BSA help? A small grant, perhaps. Photocopying. 8 Publicity There are many ways to reach local people using publicity that is available for free. The BSA may have names and details in local areas, of people who want to join a group and can act as a go-between, sending on individuals details Speech & language therapy departments in your local hospital. A significant number of groups have a speech therapist involved.. The local radio: * Free publicity, details of meetings. * Interviews to explain nature of the group. *Announcement. Local newspapers: * A letter. * A phone call to the editor. *A feature article. * Item in the community announcements/notices column. Posters : * What sort? * Where? * How long? Other Sources: * Citizens Advice Bureau. * Samaritans. *Local directories. *Churches. 9 Establishing the group What kind of group will it be? How big: what kind of structure? Be flexible. Keep an open spirit dont become closed and cliquey. Meeting how frequently? Always set an agenda, with different activities from week to week. Agenda posted to members. Accepting new members important; agree on how to introduce and involve new members. Develop a group newsletter the BSA can send you examples of good practice from other groups 10 Leadership All groups need leaders. They naturally evolve, or are elected. Perhaps it needs someone to kick off being a front person; to liase with the BSA; and not to dominate. Leadership behaviour will be determined by various influences: *His/her personality, *Behaviour of other group members, and *The situations facing the group. Try to allow open discussion of which influences are prevailing at any particular time. . A good group leader : * Communicates empathy. * Communicates respect. * Is concise. * Has good listening skills. * Is flexible and adaptable. 11 Behaviour In a group setting, behaviour is everything. Recognise the following : Aggression, attempt to dominate. Submissiveness can be an indirect way of seeking control. Assertion. * Greater self-confidence. * Greater confidence in others. * Increased self-responsibility. * Increased self-control. * Respect. *Leads to increased chance of everyone gaining something useful. Groups must be sensitive, and respond to difficult behaviour from members withdrawing, to members becoming overbearing. 12 Relationships A group needs to be formal enough to be well-organised, but friendly enough to make new members feel welcome and involved. A framework is needed, so that: Decisions can be made. No one person dominates the group. The group has stability and continuity. New members understand what is going on. New ideas can be introduced. Take into account: How big is your group now? How large might it become? Are you going to restrict numbers? Are there professionals (eg SLTs) in the group? Formal constitution? Policies from the BSA? Money? Sharing jobs out. Concentrating on mutual support. Rotating positions of responsibility. Strong personalities in the group. Other groups in the area. For groups being professionally organised and led: Choose a structure which allows most members to join in. Encourage new members to take on jobs. A time-limitation for the leadership? Keep simple records. Dont let discussion of the organisation take over. Avoid cliques. 13 Membership Ask yourself three things: Who will be members of the group? What do you want to achieve? What activities could you undertake? Membership: Are you going to require subscriptions? What happens if people dont pay do they stop being members? Will members need to make some commitment; i.e. agreeing with the objectives of the group? Will they be required to attend regularly? Must they take on some task at some stage? Newcomers: The situation will be new and unfamiliar. The group are strangers to them. Newcomers may be admitting for the first time that they stammer. Newcomers may find it embarrassing to speak in a group. They will have their personal history about their stammer. They may harbour strong feelings, of which they are not fully aware. They are seeking to change part of themselves. Whatever the conclusions to these points, membership should have a common bond : A similar problem. A common feeling or outlook. A particular characteristic in common; i.e. stammering. Providing information, advice and personal support. Need for information is paramount to most. Asking people with specialist knowledge. Compiling a library of relevant books/articles. Producing literature. Knowing other useful sources of help. Providing Services. Is a service being provided elsewhere? How will it succeed? Who can use the service? Cost. Priorities. Any one in need. Social Activities. Country walks. Films. Dancing. Meals. Museums. Coffee evening. Trip to town. Fund Raising. Some do; some dont. What are your reasons? Do you need money? Campaigning. If you feel you want to. Why? How? 14 Achieving What is it feasible to achieve? Take into account: Your members situation. The size of your active membership. The attitude of the professional community towards you. What resources you have, initially. What do you want to achieve? Goals the overall aims of the group. You and your members must determine this. Even if groups share the same problem, the goals they set themselves may be very different; e.g. all members feel welcomed and supported. Objectives these are the smaller and more precise aims the group sets itself in order to reach a goal. They may vary over time, and change as the group changes; e.g. meet monthly with a social programme and events. Set priorities these will evolve as compromises between various points of view of group members. They should be a realistic way of appreciating that the group will probably want to do a lot of things, and that peoples views will differ on what should be done first. 15 Conflict Some conflict is likely to be a part any group, including a self-help group, where feelings may be running high, and there are expectations within a group. The bigger the group, the greater the potential for conflict. Its how its managed that is the key; it must be treated effectively if the group is to survive. Do you need guidance in conflict resolution?. Assumptions: Conflict can only occur if the people involved are interdependent. Conflict is rare if relationships are tenuous. Results of conflict become more serious as group members become closer personally. If groups suppress conflict, there will be an accumulation of feeling. Conflict faced and managed creates real potential for growth. The larger the number of healthy conflicts, the greater the stability of the organisation. Difficult behaviour: People talk too much, dominating. People who over-intellectualise, preventing members from handling nitty-gritty issues, or making progress. People whose body-language indicates that they are disinterested, or bored. People who wander off the point of discussion. People who continually interrupt, or talk over. Action: Feelings re. the person how do you respond? How this person affects others and group tasks. Why is this person being like this? Some people * fight for attention. * dont know how to articulate. * have bad experiences of groups in the past. Response: Build support from other group members. Build on contribution of others to develop discussion. Interrupt the speaker. Challenge the speaker to be concrete. Clarify what the difficult person has said. Avoid being defensive in your criticism. Dont compete with this difficult person. Break groups into smaller groups. Get individual to be precise about their criticism/complaint. 16 Ending a group A group ending is sometimes the reality; it can be better to end well than to have it fizzle out. This could be due to: Lack of meeting place/resources. Apathy among members. Rural area, scattering. A key dominant member leaves. At some point a decision needs to be made. Inform the BSA immediately you begin running into trouble, so that we may help and support in some way. Could members disperse to other groups? With more groups around the country, hopefully it will be possible to find a new group to join, which is not too far from the finishing group. Perhaps specific publicity would be an option, to inject new blood into a group, thus averting any close down. 17 Things to discuss as a group Warm-ups: Good news Introduce someone else Can you top this? Who do you want to be in the next life? Favourite game as a child Shaking hands introduction Introduce yourself as a famous person Name game with famous people Introduce an item of rare knowledge Discussing stammering: Worst experience Moment felt best regarding stammering 10 most difficult situations for members Easiest situations Are you comfortable around other people who stammer? Is stammering more comfortable than change? Advice for people who are listening to a person who stammers Would you be a different kind of person if you didnt stammer? Most difficult words; a story Design a stammering therapy course What advantages has stammering given you? Best way to react if someone behaves inappropriately Best times and ways to disclose your stammer If you could change one thing about your stammering Guest speakers: Local yoga/stress management speaker. Group members do a presentation. Speech & language therapists/students come to the group. Personal contracts: Members make contracts to do specific tasks between meetings. Members make contracts to do specific tasks during meetings. Role-playing: The telephone call. Job interviews. Angry or impatient customer Demanding boss Social events: Go out to a local match, bowling club or cinema. Have a BSA fund-raising event. Have a picnic. Go on a hike. Volunteer your group to answer phone on a local radio. Visit a museum. Volunteer to do some civic work. Public speaking: Build a story, person by person Debate Impromptu speaking Perform a scene from a play. Put together a news broadcast. Video camera: Video tape members giving speeches. Video tape a meeting. Make a 5 minute item. 18a A protocol for child members of self-help groups It is the policy of the British Stammering Association that young people under 18 years may be allowed to join BSA-supported self-help groups if accompanied by a parent. Any variance to this policy will need to be negotiated with the BSA at the outset, and cleared with them. Reasons for and against attendance will have to be considered. It is imperative that you meet with one or both of any childs parents, and be quite detailed and thorough about what parents are told, regarding expectations/activities of the group. The whole self-help group must be briefed before any child attends, so the group can be sensitive in its conduct, e.g. use of language and humour. A decision must be taken group by group about a lower age limit for any child. A decision is also needed about how many children are in the group It is advisable, before taking a young person on, to contact your local: Social Services Citizens Advice Bureau You will also be able to ask for any advice these organisations may have. For your protection, you need to have a policy on the involvement of children and young people in your self-help group. This policy must be written, and kept at all times in your group records. There has to be a recognised protocol for child protection That way, you will have registered the fact that you have one or more children in your group. 18b Protocol: equal opportunities and confidentiality policies The British Stammering Association aims to ensure that no job applicant, employee, volunteer worker or member receives less favourable treatment on grounds of race, colour, nationality, religion or other belief, racial or ethnic origins, age, gender, marital status, sexual orientation or disability. The BSA will only recognize and support self-help groups which agree to conduct themselves in accordance with the principles of its equal opportunities policy, as set out above. All group members should be aware of the policy, and it is the responsibility of the chair/organiser to ensure that it is dealt with in the induction process for new members. Group members must feel able to speak with the group chair/organiser about how to deal with any situation arising which they feel conflicts with the equal opportunities policy. The BSA is available to advise and assist in cases where group organisers or members feel unsure about the implementation of the policy. Groups should also have a confidentiality policy. This need not be in writing but the chair/leader must take appropriate steps to ensure that everyone in the group is aware of the need to maintain confidentiality in respect of personal matters shared in group meetings. Group members must feel safe in the knowledge that their confidentiality will be respected, regardless of person or subject. 19 Statement for leaders of self-help groups I hereby acknowledge receipt of the Guide to Starting and Managing a Self-Help Support Group. This Guide belongs to the British Stammering Association, but may be retained by an active self-help group as long as it is required. I hereby accept responsibility for ensuring that any self-help group which I am involved in managing, and which seeks BSA recognition and support, abides by the protocols on child members, equal opportunities and confidentiality, as set out in the Guide.
