Notes (from Keith):
The group's inaugural meeting was on 26th May 2007. It will now meet every 4 weeks, starting Friday 15th June at 7.30pm.
Venue: 7, Westhawe, Bretton, Peterborough PE3 8BA
Minutes of the inaugural meeting and further details about the group are available on its website at www.abia29.hemscott.net/psshg.htm
The group's aims are to provide a place where people who stammer...
can talk and exchange information in order that they can meet their own needs and help others who stammer.
can take responsible jobs in the group to enhance the cooperative work of the group.
can broaden their understanding about all aspects of stammering and help at events to raise the public awareness of stammering.
Paul and I will welcome any stammerer from any ethnic background because stammering is not restricted by race or religion. Both Paul and I stammer. However I am a recovering stammerer and Paul has completed a degree in Human Communication (Speech and Language therapy). If you want to come to talk to either of us please do. If you are under 18, please come with a parent or guardian. If you are an adult but want a friend present, that is no problem either.
I have talked with Catherine Holland a speech and language therapist at the Peterborough District Hospital (01733 874227). She is excited about my ideas for the new Group and has agreed to come and talk to us about what she can do to provide Speech Therapy at the District Hospital.
I am working a lot globally with all nationalities. One of my International Stuttering Association (ISA) projects is set out in www.indiastammering.com. The Indian team I have working with me has done a tremendous job. When time permits, I will be doing the same kind of project in Pakistan. I would welcome support from the local Asian Communities with relatives back in Asia who are fluent or who stammer. From my contacts in Asia, my understanding is that there is a real stigma attached to those who stammer. Stammerers have a difficult time getting jobs, and very hard time getting a job to match their intellect. Raising Stammering Awareness in Asia is a worthwhile task to help those who stammer and to help the different Nations use the abilities of stammerers.
I look forward to meeting you on or before the 26th of May 2007.
