Speaking Out
Software for better speech
Devices like SpeechEasy and VoiceAmp are portable and expensive. There is a growing range of software that can be downloaded and in some cases used on a mobile phone or portable computer in the same way, although frequency altered feedback is not always available. Here is an overview of the main products.
Artefactsoft
The Artefactsoft Pocket DAF/FAF Assistant is a software application that combines Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) and Frequency Altered Feedback (FAF) techniques. There is a version for desktop PCs and a version for handheld computers running Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile 5.0 operating systems.
The application is compatible with Bluetooth (wireless) headsets on those Pocket PCs that support Bluetooth headset connections.
The application provides an installation program that creates all necessary icons and shortcuts on the computer desktop.
Cost: Registered version of Pocket DAF/FAF Assistant Single User costs $69.95. Pocket DAF/FAF Assistant Professional costs $89.95.

SpeechGym
This is a straightforward system which only has delayed feedback (not frequency feedback). There is a desktop version and pocket PC 2003/Windows mobile version. Instructions for download and purchase are on the website.
The free trial for SpeechGym is 7 days.
Cost: $30 ($40 for a mobile PC).

FluencyPal
FluencyPal also has only delayed feedback and is designed to run on S60 Symbian mobile phones, including Nokia 6630, 6680, 6681, 6682, N70, N72 and N90. New releases of FluencyPal that support many other new phone models such as Nokia E61, E62, E90, N95 were scheduled for release in May 2007.
The delay range is from 50 to 200 ms in intervals of 10 ms. There is a free seven-day download trial.
